Islamic Calligraphy

Islam prohibits the representation of God with images, therefore artists focused on artistic writing in order to beautify the Qur’an. The result is Islamic calligraphy, based on the Arabic script. The artists avoid figurative art, and create abstract religious art of extraordinary beauty. The words often translate into variations of “God is Great,” or “Allāhu Akbar.” I collected here some calligraphic images from various traditions.
